Who We Are
Wailuku Union Church is a member of the United Church of Christ, founded 1866, as an English speaking Congregational Church in Central Maui. In 1830, the production of sugar cane brought with it an English-speaking population to Maui. Wailuku Union Church was established to unite Protestants of any denominational background in worship and mission for God. More than 150 years later we continue our congregational heritage, multi-cultural complexion and theologically-exciting journey following the Word of God.
Our denominational roots are traced back to the Pilgrims who settled in Plymouth Rock. Their descendants sent the first missionary company to Hawaii in 1820 to bring the Gospel to the Hawaiian people. These missionaries alphabetized the Hawaiian language, translated and printed the Bible into Hawaiian and set up schools and seminaries to teach the Hawaiian people to read and become the pastors for the churches they established. All of the churches worshipped in the Hawaiian language until the sugar plantations brought English speakers to Maui. What are we like?
We are a multi ethnic congregation founded by those who were involved in establishing the sugar industry on Maui, combined with the missionary roots of the Congregational Church and members of the Chinese Church in Wailuku (who joined Wailuku Union Church when their church closed in 1941), we are a mixture of many ethnic backgrounds. We are theologically diverse. Our congregation is made up of a variety of faith backgrounds: Catholics, Baptist, Evangelicals, Liberals and Charismatic. We find our common ground in Christ, treat each other with respect, seek to know more about God and with the help of the Holy Spirit, we live by the example of Christ. |
What are our commitments?
We are a people on a mission. We recognize that everything we do - from worship to operating the food pantry - is part of our participation in what God is doing in the world. We have gone through a process of discernment by studying God’s Word, listening to God and each other, prayer, reading the thoughts of others, discussing where we see God moving and discovering a sense of what God is calling us to be and do. As we engage in God’s mission, we believe that God will continue to lead and provide us with what we need for the journey. We believe that God is still speaking. (United Church of Christ) |
